Frano Milos Plavac Peninsula Peljesac 2005 Croatia

Plavac is plentiful on the Peljesac peninsula. (What would Eliza Dolittle have made of that?)

It is closely related to Zinfandel but has a lighter and more herbaceous or “underbrushy” side to it. This wine is quite complex and has some characteristics in common with a mature Barolo.

Pfneiszl Kekfrankos Ujra Egyutt 2007 Hungary

The Hungarians and Austrians both make a wine from Blaufrankish, or Kekfrancos, in Hungarian. Whatever you want to call it this organic beauty was the big favorite at our recent Thursday tasting. Deep, black fruit flavors with a hint of smokiness are evident here, but the wine is light to medium bodied with a complexity not often found in wines twice the price. Hint: decant this for 30-40 minutes before drinking and you will think you are drinking a fancy Burgundy!

Teliani Valley Tsolikouri 2007 Republic of Georgia

The Georgian Republic is home to the birthplace of winemaking. Tsolikouri is one of the native white grapes. Although it has a funny name it is really pretty easy to love. Bright and minerally with clean fruit, it may remind you of a dry Vouvray or maybe a Pinot Blanc. Don't be scared.
