Henri Bonneau Chateauneuf-du-Pape "Marie Beurrier" 2003 France
Henri Bonneau is a legend. There are few people of his stature still about. He works with extremely low yields, ferments in cement tanks and then transfers the fermented wine into very old Burgundy barrels. He says "There are no secrets" to his winemaking. Then he simply waits until he feels the wine is ready, which may be 6 to 10 years, or more. His wines take a long time to come around for the most part. And this bottle is no exception. I sampled this at a tasting and the distributor told me he had opened it the night before. We had another, simpler wine from this vintage, and it took one full day to begin to open up. Put this away, or allow time to air... like the day before. This is an extraordinary bottle. If there are no secrets, why aren't there more wines like this?
